ferry ‘ing it from dominican republic (dr) to puerto rico (pr)

If only there were a ferry (cruise ship) taking you to most countries in the world. This was the most inexpensive, reasonable, and easy way to travel from one island to the other.

What an awesome way to travel between the two islands. Plus, no charge for your suitcases! Up to 3 per person. You can have backpacks or other bags with you. Suitcases are not allowed on board.

I love it when the stars aligned just for you.

Jovan and I had 3 suitcases each. I’m carrying our kitchen and bathroom with me and he’s carrying his gaming PC which took up two suitcases. The CPU alone took one.

The fare? An affordable $143 per person. Less than airfare. Yay!

We arrived really early which is so not like us and that made it so that we were able to find good seating that would later serve as a bed. At the time of this writing, you can book a cabin to sleep for an extra $100 but by the time I booked it there were none available. Mind you, I purchased our tickets BEFORE we flew from Florida to Dominican Republic but it was still too late. A few weeks earlier when I was looking at it there were still cabins available. I procrastinated a little and they were gone.

It wasn’t bad. We took over a long sectional couch with tables and chairs around it for more sitting but it wasn’t full or anything. I talked to our “neighbors” hogging up about three sectional couches and she warned me that it would get so full people would be sleeping on the carpeted floor. I later found out this happened to them when they were going from PR to DR. This wasn’t the case this trip from DR to PR.

We didn’t explore the ship like we should have, I realized the next morning. There was a movie theatre we didn’t explore and a small quiet restaurant/bar hiding on the deck below us. There is also dinner and breakfast you can prepay and have tickets for. I didn’t do that. I knew they offered dinner but I thought I could pay right then and there. It’s possible that you can still pay for it on board at this little reception window we saw coming in. I didn’t even try. For dinner we settled for the bar on the open deck where they had entertainment for a few hours at night. They have tacos and pizza mainly.

For breakfast we just waited to get to my son’s house where he left us food and coffee ready. Plus, we’re not people who have to get up and eat right away. We take our time waking up and lounging around before we eat.

Back to the sleeping on the couches it wasn’t quiet for long. People stay up late and go back and forth between bar and couches and some people stay up talking. A man kept shushing everybody and they all ignored him. If you wanted peace and quiet pay the extra $100 for a cabin. Simple.

It was annoying but it is an open area with chairs and couches for people to eat, socialize and hang out. There are TVs with sports or news on. We were exhausted. I did go check out the entertainment for a bit. A comedian was up doing his stand-up. It was good. I watched it while I waited for our fish tacos. We had eaten pizza right when we got there at Jovan’s request. It wasn’t great food. I’m sure the dinner you prepay is better and probably includes rice and beans and possibly chicken which both PR and DR call their flag.

It’s a great way to travel and like I said, I wish this option was available in more places. Maybe in other parts of the world it is. I will let you know.
