VITERBO (BARBARANO ROMANO)
I ended up here by chance. Thanks to AirBnB. It’s one hour north of Rome, a tiny medieval village called Barbarano Romano is right next to Viterbo, or part of the region called Viterbo.
People come here to hike and be near nature. I learned that lots of people who live and work in Rome own a home here to get away from the madness. It’s very quaint and you can get lost (mentally) in the tiny streets just looking around and enjoying the ancient castle-like structures. There are houses for sale here if you’re a digital nomad or a retiree looking for an EXTREMELY quiet, old-type-of-living life.
Two activities I found here without doing a ton of research or looking because I was enjoying the peace so much after just arriving from Orlando and Miami, Florida, USA
- Hiking
- Horseback riding through the mountains
WHERE TO EAT
There are three restaurants in the whole village. I mostly ate at the coffee bars where they have their version of a sandwich which is really dough and a meat of your choice. Very plain, surprisingly. Some are spicy which is the one I chose most of the time so I could have some flavor. In italy I found the meals to be very basic with just two or three ingredients. You had to go to different levels of fancy to find a larger of variety of ingredients and really flavorful food. You find the same pasta dishes in pretty much all the restaurants.
This is the best healthiest meal I had in Barbarano Romano. It was farm-to-table. The owners own a farm that they run during the weekdays and only open the restaurant on the weekends. It was simple, fresh, and delicious.
Below is the heaviest food I found and with a wider variety of flavors incorporated into them, thus more satisfying to me. The girl serving seemed to be sick with the flu so that was a turn off. I was a little bit concerned. Thankfully I didn’t catch what she had. This is the second out of the three restaurants in the whole village. If you do go here you won’t have a hard time finding it.
I found some entertainment options. I didn’t attend any but I display them below to show what I found:
This is obviously a place you want to go with friends or a partner. Only go alone if you’re really craving some solitude and self-care expecially to detox from a stressful time in your life, etc. I stayed 2 weeks and got a lot of work done as a digital nomad. My airbnb had decent internet and I was even able to day trade while tending to business matters, exercising, meditating, planning my upcoming stays in Italy, hiking, and just enjoying the quiet in a medieval town.
